Metropolitan Championship RPAYC 14/03/2013

Thanks to the great organisation at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and all who competed we had a terrific Metro Championship last weekend.

Colin Cheng Winning Metropolitan ChampionshipThe weather was kind with excellent breeze on Saturday and a bit less on Sunday to let us recover. Our PRO Col Chidgey and the start finish crew appreciated the luxury of the Afreds start boat and set a tough assignment with a couple of O3 and I3 courses and one hour long races on Saturday. With just under 3 hours of race time most sailors had a good workout on the water and slept soundly on Saturday night.

Congratulations to Colin Cheng (Standard pictured left), Christopher Anderson (Radial) and Finnian Alexander (4.7) for their convincing wins. Each had all firsts in the six race series after a drop and Colin and Finnian won every race. Dianne Sissingh braved an injury after being attacked by the boom vang the previous week. She sailed very well to win the Womens. Of the Masters Sean Feeney (Standard Master) and Martin White (Radial GM) did very well to finish second and third respectively in the open fleet. In the youth divisions Christopher Anderson naturally was best in the Radial and Colin Suvak who was 4th overall was best in the Standards.

Vaucluse Regatta 17/02/2013

The 81st edition of theVaucluse Regatta will be held this Saturday 23 February, and is expected to attract an anticipated record fleet of up to 90 lasers, as well as an eclectic mix of yachts and other dinghies. The Vaucluse Yacht Club and event sponsors SLAM, WinningAppliances andNB Sail Sports invite owners of yachts, OK dinghies, Vee-Esses, Lasers and Laser Radials / 4.7s to compete in three races starting from Watsons Bay.

Vaucluse LasersLast year, the Vaucluse Regatta saw an International fleet of Lasers including entrants from Norway and Singapore, as well as other local clubs.

Already boasting a strong Laser fleet with many top notch sailors, the impressive Vaucluse contingent will be strengthened further with the addition of competitors from other Sydney clubs for the day, which also happens to be the latest rendition of the Vaucluse – Double Bay Laser Challenge. The Challenge is a friendly rivalry between sister clubs, where results of all competitors from each club count towards the overall Challenge Trophy.

Fresh from competing in the Laser Masters State Championships, many of Vaucluse’s Laser and Laser Radial competitors will throw down the gauntlet and challenge the Double Bay sailors in the final episode of this series. Double Bay has held the trophy consecutively for several years, and won the first heat of the Challenge held earlier this season, proving that Vaucluse will need to sail strongly in order to win the series.

As per the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions (available at www.vaucluseyachtclub.com.au), the first race will start at 12.45pm, preceded by a briefing in the Clubhouse. A barbecue for competitors and presentation of trophies will be held after racing. All entries welcome via the Vaucluse Yacht Club website.

The Notice of Race is here.

State Masters Photos and Results 12/02/2013

Thanks to everyone who participated in the State Masters at Great Lakes Sailing Club on the weekend. We had a great event and a really good roll up with 124 entries (57 standard, 59 radial and 8 4.7's). We had 8 sailors from Queensland and a couple from Victoria among the entries.

The Great Lakes Club under President Tim Hafner did a great job with arrangements and catering. On the water our PRO Tony Denham did a terrific job with GLSC Commodore Ross Kneebone as his team setting very good courses and lines. Our rules man John Allan had a restful weekend (thanks everyone) so he took to doing the scoring (thanks John).

Conditions were pretty tough on Saturday and after the long work back home everyone felt they had a good workout by the end of the day. There were a number of pretty spectacular rides and wipeouts as can be seen from the photos on the links below. Most boats however got around the track which says something for the overall skill and fitness level of the masters sailors. On Sunday the forecast was a little iffy however after some delay the wind settled at around 10 -12 knots allowing the three scheduled races to be completed without adding to much to the aches and pains.

Brett Bayer was the best in the standard fleet and won the Standard Master cube. Greg Adams from Royal Queensland was equally dominant in winning the Radial Fleet and won the Radial Master cube. Martin Brady won the 4.7's in a close result while Vanessa Dudley made a welcome return to win the Women's cube.
