IC262 - ILCA bid process for 2011 World Championships

As part of a continuing review of our World Championship organisation the Laser Class World Council has agreed a new system to allow clubs to bid to host future World Championships.
As a starting point the World Council, with the co-operation of the Laser builders, has identified 'preferred' continents, grouping of events and dates to maximise the number of charter boats that can be available for the best possible price.
The 'preference' also establishes dates that are best for youth events and weather seasons. They continue ILCA policy of taking our championships to different parts of the world subject to season differences and the scheduling of ISAF Championships that are outside the control of ILCA.

For events in 2011 potential host clubs may apply to be considered to host one or more World Championships that do not have venues already agreed.
Applications for 2011 events will close on 1 June 2009.
Later this year bidding will open for events in 2012 and 2013. All National Associations will be advised when the biding for 2012 and 2013 is open.

The bidding and approval process will be:

1. Bid documents are published on the ILCA web site. These all follow a common format and will not change from year to year except when policy or operational changes are considered necessary.
2. Preferred continents and dates are announced together with bid closing dates.
3. Host clubs are requested to advise the ILCA Office that they are preparing a bid at the earliest opportunity before they make a formal bid.
4. Potential host clubs are requested to work in conjunction with their national Laser class association. All bids received will be sent to the national class association for comment.
5. Following the bid closing dates ILCA will review all bids and follow up with questions and a site visit if necessary. During this process the builders will be consulted on the supply of charter boats.
6. A list of recommended host clubs will be approved by the World Council.
7. A site visit will be made following World Council approval.
8. The host club will be invited to sign a contract for the hosting of events.

Full information is available on a new section of the ILCA web site:

This website has been created to enable potential host clubs and national associations to review future championships, read about relevant requirements and calculate a budget which can be submitted to ILCA as a formal bid. Each championship has specific requirements set by ILCA, and hosts can find details of these on the website and by reading the Requirements Document.

The website will show a list of all of championships that are open to bids.

Please direct any club interested in hosting an ILCA World Championship to this website.

If you or a club would like to discuss hosting an ILCA championship, ILCA requirements, bid forms or any other aspect of the championship bid process please do not hesitate to contact ILCA by phone on +44 1326 315064 or by email to office@laserinternational.org
